Telegraph – Al Qaeda Blamed For Wildfires In Europe

Telegraph.co.com Al-Qaeda has been blamed for a recent series of forest fires across Europe, as the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed they were set by arsonists as part of the group’s low-cost attack strategy.
“One should note that setting fires to forests in the countries of the European Union is a new tendency in al-Qaeda’s strategy of a ‘thousand cuts’,” Alexander Bortnikov said, according to state news agency RIA Novosti, at a meeting of heads of security agencies.
“This method allows (al-Qaeda) to inflict significant economic and moral damage without serious preliminary preparations, technical equipment or significant expenses.”
In linking al-Qaeda to the deadly wildfires, Mr Bortnikov pointed to calls to launch a “forest jihad” by various extremist websites which he said also publish detailed instructions about how and where to best carry out arson.

This subject deserves a wider discussion that I plan to publish in the near future. Can it happen here? It’s a touchy subject but one that cannot be ignored.

It’s Good Friday but it’s just another day on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan for our soldiers and Marines on the ground and in the air.

This four minute clip had me yell out TWICE. Adrenaline rush from my easy chair. Way to go guys!

“…. and I don’t like either one”!

This is a quote I heard on the Big Bear scanner, by one of the air attack guys flying over Lake Arrowhead.

The pilot was commenting on the view he had overlooking the Southland and how these fires are sprouting all over.

For a moment we may want to think about that quote.

Many of these fires are obvious arson related. The Santiago Canyon Fire in Orange County is confirmed arson and before it’s over I believe they will find the Slide Fire was a set as well. Overhead views of the fire origin shows al remote location upwind from the Green Valley community.
A new fire in Stevenson Ranch (Magic Fire) is a roadside set. The Devore Fire was set with an intent to see it move up and into Lytle Creek.
A fire without a lot of media attention is the Rainbow Fire taking out homes in Fallbrook.

It’s obvious many of these fires are sets and sleeper cells, working with little to no smarts could work this out.

Something to consider.

As for the global warming argument, extended drought is not unknown to Southern California. The Santa Ana winds are an annual Fall event.

Take a look at the partial list of current fires here.

Greek Fires Terror Related?

A sensational headline but a very real subject. The quote below is taken from Atlas Shrugs.

“The police, the armed forces and the Greek antiterrorism authorities have found arson devices in Greek forest areas which are triggered by mobile phones. Satellite images reveal that within a space of a single hour, many fires appeared in different locations of Greece. The plan was to make the fire brigade forces overstretch.

It is certainly a terrorist attack. George Karatzaferis, the leader of the right wing party, LAOS, called the day, ‘Greece’s 9/11’.

Who did it is anyone’s guess. It could be Greek anarchists or radical groups of Greece’s northern neighbours which have claims on northern Greece. We should never forget that there will be general elections in Greece soon. Who might have an interest from an image of a weak and overstretched state mechanism?”

First indications are a 65 year old man and a couple of juveniles were arrested for setting a couple of the 100 fires were set. As the Greece Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was quoted saying:

“So many fires breaking out simultaneously in so many parts of the country cannot be a coincidence”

I hope Homeland Security sends a team over to review what the Greek arson investigations reveal. California and much of the U.S. West is vulnerable to organized arson by determined terrorists. Does anyone know if we have a fire-terror response plan on the State or community level?

Some food for thought from idle chat forum from Cyprus.

The Reading List

I’m currently reading Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America by Brigitte Gabriel. Brigitte is intimately qualified to warn the U.S.A and the West of the intentions of radical Islam. Her story of an idyllic childhood in Lebanon shattered at age 10 by a war between Christians and Muslims is chilling. Brigitte witnessed first hand how radical elements of Islam used the laws of a country to their perverted end. I am only halfway through Brigitte’s captivating story.

A book I finished last month is The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. Author Lawrence Wright details the birth of Al-Qaeda. I was surprised to learn Bin Laden is actually a dolt, that he has more in common with Forest Gump (being in the right place at the right time) than religious charismatics. Bin Laden is led by the nose by fellow tyrant Ayman al-Zawahiri. The road to September 11, 2001 is chronicled thoroughly as are other terrorist attacks preceding it. Wright also focuses on the investigators tasked to catch Bin Laden operatives. Anyone interested in knowing more about the history of our enemy should pick this one up.

I finished reading “Rescue Men” by Charles Kenney last week and I am having quite a time trying to properly summarize Kenney’s brilliant book. It’s a MUST read for anyone in the fire service. I intend to post a proper summary of the book soon. In the meantime please refer to the Amazon ad on the sidebar for others reviews. Rescue Men would make a perfect gift for anyone interested in firefighters, firefighting or Boston Fire Department history!
