Two Chicago Fire Department firefighters, Edward Stringer and Cory Ankum died in the line of duty today in a building collapse in a warehouse blaze.

ABC News reports;

Two Chicago firefighters were killed and more than a dozen injured Wednesday after they became trapped in a building while battling a warehouse blaze. Rescuers dug frantically to free the two, who were among at least four firefighters trapped inside the building. At least 15 other firefighters were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the deaths just before 11 a.m. Eastern time.

“Without warning the roof collapsed trapping four firefighters,” Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Huff said at a press conference. “Despite our best efforts at the scene and in the hospitals, two firefighters succumbed to their injuries.”

Hoff identified the dead firemen as Edward Stringer and Cory Ankum. Stringer was a 12-year veteran firefighter.
Ankum, a 38-year-old father of three, was a three-year veteran of the Chicago police force when he switched careers and joined the fire department 16 months ago. His youngest child is just one year old.

Wildland Firefighter Fatalities 2007-2009 (Report)

3 comments

Wildfire Today’s Bill Gabbert points us to this report from Dick Mangan of Blackbull Wildfire Services that details wildland fire fatalities between 2007 and 2009.

Mangan’s insights are drawn from data from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s Safety and Health Working Team.

Mangan breaks down the dry data from NWCG  and gives us a well detailed narrative with the insights you expect from a 30 year wildland fire veteran.

I was surprised to find that only one (1) firefighter died from a burnover in the past three years.  Aviation related accidents claimed the most lives (16) and heart attacks killed ten wildland firefighters between 2007 and 2009.  Mangan observations and conclusions are notable and very much worth the read.

The 2009 wildland fatalities data from the NWCG”s SHWT can be found here.

From CFA Direct;

Tolmie & District Rural Fire Brigade member Hugh Monroe died yesterday after the tanker he was driving was involved in an accident on the way to an incident in Victoria’s North East. The accident happened about 14 kilometres from Tatong.

Mr Monroe, 62, had been a volunteer for nearly 11 years and was a much loved member of both his brigade and community. A dedicated firefighter and brigade 3rd Lieutenant, he was involved in the 2006 campaign through Victoria’s high country and the Black Saturday fires last year.

Mr Monroe was a Vietnam Veteran and retired to Tolmie after working as a protective services officer in Melbourne, guarding the Shrine of Remembrance. Handy with a pool cue and a keen fly fisherman, which he wrote about for his local paper, Mr Monroe ran fishing and tourism trips. He was also a passionate gardener and opened his property to visitors as part of the Open Garden Scheme.

An active, community-minded man, Mr Monroe will be deeply missed. CFA extends its sincere condolences to Mr Monroe’s family, friends and fellow brigade members.

Chief Officer Russell Rees described the accident as a tragedy and said it “reinforces once again the dedication and commitment of our people across the emergency services.” He said work protecting Victoria’s communities would go on today and into the week “under a shadow of loss as we mourn Mr Monroe’s sacrifice.”

Chief Executive Officer Mick Bourke joined Russell in expressing his condolences to Mr Monroe’s family and friends, and the wider CFA family. “When one of our own dies in active service, it deeply affects the whole organisation. All across the state, CFA members are sharing this pain and sending their condolences to those involved.”

Mr Monroe is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kathy, and his children.

Deepest condolences to Firefighter Monroe’s family, friends and his Brigade members. RIP Hugh Monroe.

Trinity Alps Tragedy, An On Scene Account

The scope of the helicopter crash that claimed nine firefighters in the Trinity Alps is beginning to sink in. These guys were America’s best, proud sons of Oregon and brothers in the greater firefighter family.

When accidents happen the incident is studied in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. In this case the firefighters were passengers. The investigation is in the hands of the NTSB.

Reports surrounding the accident are surfacing.

Here is a first person account of the crash.

My family sends our thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery for the four survivors. Our condolences to the families and friends of the 9 fallen firefighters.

Dubai Fire; When Money is No Object

4 comments

I admit a fascination with Dubai. Over the top architecture, man made island cities and a place where Chevy Corvettes arrive at an emergency scenes before fire suppression apparatus.

Yes it’s true and you can read about it here, where you will also read about the fleet of Hummers they operate;

“Brigadier Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, Director of Dubai Civil Defence, said the civil defence will soon start using a customised Corvette car to attend to fires quickly, to prevent them spreading.He said the car is a small, light and fast car which can beat traffic and contains highly-effective firefighting and prevention systems in addition to rescue equipment in cases where people are trapped in cars.Equipment in the car includes a portable fire extinguisher, hydraulic equipment, firefighting equipment and first aid equipment.Brigadier Al Matroushi who suggested the idea of developing a sports car and followed up its development daily, said one of the reasons behind a fire getting worse was the distance between civil defence centres and accident locations.”

…and they have numerous of each!

The rationale is superb. A couple of first responders race to the scene to size up or initiate a rescue. Think about it, how many times have you arrived at a fire scene and thought if only you were a few minutes faster?

Fire service in Dubai is facilitated by the Dubai Civil Defence, under the Ministry of Interior. The DCB website reveals a surprising few fire stations (8) for a city of almost 1.5 million with a projected annual growth rate of 6%.

Dubai World, (the offshore island city) and other water front properties have their own emergency and fire service, Dubai World Fire Department who also work closely with Dubai Civil Defence under a mutual aid arrangement.

Bloggers in Dubai describe a city with a fair share of major fires and vehicle fires as a result of collisions. Dubai Thoughts blog notes the prevalence of vehicle fires as a result of collision and reports the government is investigating the anomaly.

The city suffers tragedy like every other major city. The Oz expatriate authors of Dubai Thoughts blog offered a heroes tribute to two fallen firefighters.

Gulf News reports;

“Dubai: Two firefighters, including an Emirati officer, died while battling a fire that broke out in a building under construction at Palm Jumeirah on Friday, Gulf News has learnt.

According to official sources, the firefighters died of asphyxia and their bodies were recovered from the gutted building early on Saturday. Thick smoke engulfed the seven-storey building and hampered the search for the bodies till the morning, officials said.”

Tanker Pilot Dies In Colorado Wildfire

MyFoxColorado “A single-engine air tanker crashed, killing the pilot, who was battling a blaze at Fort Carson that had scorched 9,000 acres — about 14 square miles — and forced the evacuation of people living near the base. Firefighters were unable to get any part of that blaze contained by late last night, base spokesman Capt. Gregory Dorman said. Two shelters were set up at the post and another at a nearby community college to house the evacuees. The name of the pilot has not been released.”

11 Croatian Firefighters Die In Line Of Duty

2 comments

Two were 17 years old.

From BBC International;

“The blaze, which broke out on Kornat island, killed six firemen on Thursday last week when a sudden change of wind direction trapped them in the flames.
Five more firemen have now since died in hospital.
Police have detained a national park receptionist on suspicion of causing the blaze with a discarded cigarette.
The wildfire is the worst incident of its kind in the country, wreaking havoc on Kornat island, 30km (20 miles) south of Zadar.
Kornat is the largest of a group of islands that makes up a national park in the southern part of the Kornati archipelago.

Another two firemen remain in hospital in critical condition.”

The two teenagers were Karlo Severdija and Mario Stancic. The fire commander has been arrested for sending under-trained fire personnel into a region with ‘erratic winds predicted’. It’s also reported he did not evacuate injured fire personnel nor did he send adequate backup even though he knew conditions were deteriorating.

These poor kids were looking for an adventure and to make a few bucks. Their lives were just beginning. Someone should be held to pay.

One thing for certain is this two-bit fire chief won’t be trotting out an ACLU type lawyer with a pr company as supporting cast to defend him. They mete out old school, old world justice in that quarter and unless he is able to hide under the skirt of a paid off general he’s looking at some serious time on a chain gang, or worse and so be it.

In the USA you need a 40 hour basic wildland firefighter course and be able to yell out the 10 Standing Firefighting Orders and 13 (18) conditions that Shout Watch Out before you can get on a fire line.

So much went wrong with this Kornati Island fire that it’s hard to avoid the obvious point that some Croatia fire commanders lack even basic knowledge of wildland firefighting.

Hopefully the deaths of these 11 firefighters can come to mean something, maybe what can be learned from their deaths will help prevent future tragedies.

More about Croatia.
