Today’s observed fire behavior
West Zone:Fire behavior was high to extreme in the north, northwest and southwest flanks with group tree torching, spotting and short duration crown fire runs. Fire exhibited backing towards the community of BIG SUR. East Zone: Active fire runs with occasional group torching.
Projected incident movement/spread 12, 24, 48, and 72 hour time frames:
12 hours: West Zone: Fire should continue to grow on all flanks. Fire movement to the south and north will continue during periods of active fire behavior. Fire projected to reach the north containment line near Big Pine. East Zone: Fire movement is expected to the east-northeast into the East Zone toward Tassajara Rd and southeast towards Rodeo Flats.
24 hours: Fire is expected to spread south of Dolan Canyon, southeast towards Rodeo Flats Trail and north towards Cachagua. East Zone: Fire movement is expected to the east-northeast into the East Zone toward Tassajara Rd and southeast towards Rodeo Flats.
48 hours: Strong off shore flow in the evening will push fire west towards the coast.
72 hours: Continued off shore winds will puch fire west towards the coast.
Significant events today:
West Zone: A major burnout was accompilshed from Big Sur River to Little Sur River. A mandatory evacuation and road closure is in effect for the entire community of BIG SUR and both sides of Hwy 1 from Lucia Inn north to Palo Colorado Road. An evacuation advisory remains in place for residents of the Palo Colorado Canyon from Hwy 1 to the Pico Blanco Boy Scout Camp and from Lucia Inn South to Lime Kiln State Park. East Zone: Continue structure preparation on Carmel Valley Road and Cachagua areas and line improvement near Arroyo Seco, Piney Creek and Los Padres Dam. Helicopters were very effective in checking fire spread.
